‘Doctor Strange’ Costume Described And Tone Of The Film Teased

Doctor Strange opens Nov. 4, 2016, and so far we’ve heard and seen very little about the production other than who’s in it: Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and possibly Rachel McAdams. Now we’re hearing more about the tone and look of the project via Blastr and Screen Daily.

Ben Davis — director of photography on Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and now Doctor Strange — spoke to Screen Daily about the tone of Doctor Strange.

“It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it’s not your typical Marvel action movie. Most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.”

Davis also describes some of the visuals as “Escher stuff” and said, “it’s a very dark movie, I’m pleased to say.”

In other words, it sounds like Marvel is going to continue genre-hopping with their movies so we don’t get tired of them. People who are burned out on superheroes but like spy films can get into Captain America: Winter Soldier, and people who like dark supernatural weirdness can get into Doctor Strange.

Meanwhile, Disney’s African division showcased concept art of Dr. Strange in both of his guises, as a neurosurgeon and as a magic-wielding protector of Earth, and people who saw it described the art on Twitter. Yes, he’ll have a goatee (which we already knew). Yes, there are fancy robes.

No signs yet if the movie will fulfill our request for extensive scenes of Dr. Stephen Strange just trying to pronounce the word penguin.
