A group of humans travel the galaxy in a lone battleship armed with fighters against an armada of enemies trying to kill them. Nope, that’s not Battlestar Galactica we’re talking about, it’s the Japanese cartoon Space Battleship Yamato (which if you grew up in the US, you might remember as Star Blazers). Now, these humans are traveling to a distant planet to get a cure for the radiation an Alien race is bombarding Earth with…and there are no hot robots to sleep with…and the ship is actually the hulk of the WWII battleship Yamato turned into a spacecraft, so it is a little different from Battlestar. (And Yamato came a couple years before Battlestar, too.)
But now, the similarities are increasing, as Yamato is getting rebooted live-action movie that looks a bunch like the Battlestar Galactica remake. They’re even making two characters women: Giichi Aihara (Homer Glitchman in Star Blazers) and Dr. Sado (Dr. Sane in Star Blazers). The big difference will be that this is a movie and it’s being made for a modest 22 million dollars, although you wouldn’t know it to look from the trailer. It’s due out in December 2010, although who knows if it’ll make it to theaters in the states.
