‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Doesn’t Have Natalie Portman For A Surprisingly Practical Reason

Many were surprised at the word that Tessa Thompson was joining Thor: Ragnarok while Natalie Portman was likely out. And it is a surprising shift, but there turns out to be a fairly practical reason for it.

When asked about it on a podcast, Kevin Feige had a pretty simple answer: Jane Foster can’t breathe in space.

There are only a couple of scenes on Earth in this movie. Eighty to 90 percent takes place in the cosmos.

Granted, this hasn’t stopped Jane Foster before; she’s gone dimension-hopping with Thor in the past. But you can understand why the God of Thunder and his big green buddy might want to keep the scientist out of the line of fire. Although this does raise the question of whether he even has a girlfriend at all. Disappearing for long periods of time is not usually helpful when you’re trying to maintain a relationship, and Thor, at least in the comics, has a questionable history when it comes to dating.

Then again, he does look a lot like Chris Hemsworth, so that might make up for quite a bit. We’ll find out if Jane’s got reason to be angry at her boyfriend November 2017.
