What We Can Learn From One Smuggler’s Attempt To Help Saudis Get A Buzz On

Sharia Law is no laughing matter in the Middle East. In fact, it’s no laughing matter anywhere. What is a laughing matter is the extent to which people will go to get around Sharia Law (or laws in general) as was proven by one smuggler in Saudi Arabia this week.

With a very firm no alcohol law in effect for Saudi Arabia one smuggler thought of a brilliantly simple method to usher in some good times. A method, I’m sure, some of us wish we had thought up earlier. What better way to sneak in 48,000 cans of Heineken than to slap 48,000 Pepsi logos over them? The Washington Post recently reported that a truck carrying just that amount of Pepsi (read:Heineken) was seized at the border and discovered to be the popular NPH endorsed beer.

In the article Al Batha border General Manager Abdulrahman Al-Mahna was quoted, saying “A truck carrying what first seemed to be normal cans of the soft drink Pepsi was stopped and after the standard process of searching the products, it became clear that the alcoholic beers were covered with Pepsi’s sticker logos.” Good work Abdulraman.

Having lost access to 48,000 cans of product you can bet that they’re gonna be as frustrated as, well, a funnel-less NPH. Sh*t – we already used the NPH reference.  You get the picture:
