Universal Studios Is Hiring Hordes Of Zombies For A ‘Walking Dead’ Obstacle Course

The Walking Dead has crossed the threshold from ultra-popular television show to cultural phenomena. There are now Walking Dead conventions, Walking Dead parties, even a Walking Dead cruise! And now Universal Studios Hollywood is extending the reach of the series even further with an ‘attraction’ that involves being chased by zombies through familiar show territory like Terminus and the West Georgia Correctional Facility.

From the Universal Studios website:

Coming to life July 4, enter the post-apocalyptic world of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” in an all-new year-round attraction. Prepare to fight for survival in a fully immersive journey as you navigate through a world overrun by hungry walkers. Follow in the footsteps of the human survivors as you battle your way through nightmarish iconic landscapes that bring the most popular cable TV show in history to life!

The pseudo-obstacle course features both animatronic zombies and a whackload of real people done up in authentic Walker costumes. To elevate the whole thing above your average haunted hay ride, The Walking Dead producer and zombie make-up supervisor Greg Nicotero oversaw many of the effects and organized a ‘Zombie Boot Camp’ where all the attraction’s wannabe Walkers learned how to flail, stumble, and gurgle convincingly.

The Walking Dead attraction has been in development for over two years, and it sounds like Universal Studios really pulled out the stops for this new permanent feature. In addition to cool-sounding tech like FauxFire and overhead heat units, they also promise “environmental smells throughout.”

I don’t know about you, but The Walking Dead is the last show I’d ever want to smell. Unless we’re talking about smelling Daryl, in which case make room for my freckled ass, ’cause I’m there.
