There Was An Amazing Medical Joke In ‘The Silence Of The Lambs’ And You Probably Missed It

Anyone who laughs at The Silence of the Lambs is either (a) one who enjoys crude humor, (b) a person who thinks anything Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) says is comedy gold, or (c) a cannibalistic murderer laughing at the film’s inaccuracies. Even so, Reddit user mrcchapman brought a particular joke to everyone’s attention today:

“I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.”

Great line from Silence of the Lambs everyone knows. But most people don’t realise Dr Hannibal Lecter is making a medical joke.

Lecter could be treated with drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors – MAOIs. As a psychiatrist, Lecter knows this.

The three things you can’t eat with MAOIs? Liver, beans, wine.

Lecter is a) cracking a joke for his own amusement, and b) saying he’s not taking his meds. (Via Reddit)

The line comes from Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel, though Lecter says “a big Amarone” instead of “a nice Chianti.” Either way, that Lecter guy can be fairly witty when he wants to. Then again, he can also slice and dice a couple of prison guards, chew their faces off, make a mask with one of them, and escape. Hardy har.
