The ‘Groundhog Day’ Musical Is Finally Coming To Broadway In 2017 And Will Last Forever

Back in January 2014, the Daily Mail reported that the creative team behind Matilda — the successful musical based on a Roald Dahl novel — wanted to do the same for another beloved pop culture property: Groundhog Day. That’s right, folks. Australian comedian and musician Tim Minchin (yes, that Tim Minchin) and partner Matthew Warchus have been composing music and writing song lyrics for a musical adaptation of the Bill Murray classic.

Guess what? According to THR, the new musical’s premiere date has been set for 2017:

Producers announced on Thursday that the new musical Groundhog Day, based on the Capra-esque 1993 screen comedy that starred Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, will begin previews on Jan. 23, 2017, with official opening set for March 9.

Minchin earlier told THR, “Our version of Groundhog Day is going to be both instantly recognizable and utterly different.” Hopefully it’s not too different, especially because the scene with Phil’s piano solo would kill on Broadway:
