Here’s The First Of Many Box Office Records ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Will Break

Chewey, we’re home. But let’s go shopping, because we’re about to make a sh*t ton of money. Of the 15 highest worldwide opening weekend grosses ever, only one dates back to before 2007: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, which earned $303,949,700 in 2005. That, despite how much everyone hated The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones (hell, I saw it twice in theaters, and all I remember is the Vader scene and that stupid coughing droid).

But that was 10 years ago, and people are actually excited for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is why it’s likely to break basically every box office record, including dethroning Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2‘s three-day opening weekend cha-ching of $483,189,427.

Globally it could rake in nearly $540 million, topping the three-day record set by the final Harry Potter film ($483.2 million). “If it pleases the fans of the old movies and also appeals to kids, watch out,” says box-office analyst Phil Contrino. (Via)

Mosquito-like “insiders” (always buzzing around; annoying; no one likes or needs them) claim that Force will receive the “widest release ever,” with “at least 4,500 locations in North America” alone. Its only competition: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Sisters, and a week later, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip, which will likely break all of Star Wars‘ briefly-held records.

It had a good run.
