His recent work on the Sin City and Machete Kills films have made Robert Rodriguez‘s name synonymous with hyper-violent action movies. Yet before he ever had the chance to dabble in either of these franchises, the Texas-based filmmaker wrote and directed Spy Kids in 2001. This in turn funded three more feature films, resulting in Rodriguez’s biggest cash cow.

That’s probably why Variety is reporting that Rodriguez’s newest project is yet another family-friendly venture, but one not entirely of his own making — Jonny Quest.

Robert Rodriguez has come on board to co-write and direct a live-action feature adaptation of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon “Jonny Quest” for Warner Bros.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” scribe Terry Rossio will co-write with Dan Lin producing through his Lin Pictures banner with Adrian Askarieh via his Prime Universe shingle.

The studio has been in development on an adaptation for quite some time and hopes Rodriguez’s angle can help get the film off the ground.

Machete will probably kill again in space, but not before Rodriguez takes a crack at one of the most-beloved cult classics Hanna-Barbera has ever produced.

No word on the currently-developing film’s potential release date, let alone a time frame for how long Rodriguez’s work on the project might take.
