George Miller Wrote This First Version Of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ On A Plane In 1997

Mad Max: Fury Road was a film that took a long, long time to get made. Miller fought for it to hit the big screen and, eventually, got the chance and knocked it out of the damn park. What we got was the best summer action blockbuster in the past decade that slapped us across the face and asked if we wanted seconds.

But where did Miller’s initial idea come from? Yes, he had the backbone of a damn good trilogy, but Max needed a new tone. He needed a companion. He needed Furiosa. He also needed a setting, story and supporting characters that could match the strangeness of the previous films.

Below is the first draft Miller penned, on an airplane from LA to Australia in 1997…

Bottom line: Miller will forever be Max’s creator. He has done other good films, but Max is his masterpiece. One more time, thanks George for making this summer great.
