Lorde Knows: The 5 Youngest Solo Female Artists With Billboard #1 Hits

By 10.03.13

If you don’t already know who Lorde is, you will now: her debut single, “Royals,” is the number-one song in the country, according to Billboard, usurping Miley Cyrus’s destructive two-week reign. This is impressive for about 37 reasons, including: the EP “Royals” first appeared on, The Love Club, was released for free in November 2012; no artist since Alanis Morissette in 1995 has peaked on the Alternative Songs chart for as long as Lorde has, with seven weeks; and, oh yeah, Lorde is only 16 years old, having been discovered when she was 12.

She is the youngest solo female artist since Tiffany in 1987 to have a #1 hit, and she’s one of only five under the age of 17 to EVER done so. (The all-time youngest solo artist record, for both male and female, is “Fingertips Pt. 2” by Stevie Wonder.) Here are the four other teenage singers to come before Lorde.

“I Will Follow Him” by Little Peggy March (15)

“I’m Sorry” by Brenda Lee (15)

“It’s My Birthday” by Lesley Gore (16)

“I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany (16)

“Royals” by Lorde (16)

Amazing coincidence that Little Peggy March and Lorde both mention Maybach and Cristal.
