The Flaming Lips Released A Companion Album To Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’

The Dark Side of the Moon

This is either the announcement for the weirdest album of 2014, or an elaborate April Fool’s joke. Last night, the tie-dyed acid tablets known as the Flaming Lips revealed that not only were they working on a new album, but said new album is actually a “companion” to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, whose cover you’ve probably seen in every college dorm room ever. Via Consequence of Sound:

According to the press release, listeners are encouraged to listen to Flaming Side of the Moon and Dark Side of the Moon simultaneously. “For ideal listening conditions, fans are encouraged to seek out the original Alan Parsons’ engineered quadraphonic LP mix of Dark Side, but it will work with the album on any format,” the press release adds. What’s more, Flaming Side of the Moon “was also carefully crafted to sync up perfectly with the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz.” (Via)

CoS writes that this could just be “one big April Fools’ Day prank,” noting that the Flaming Lips “have made no mention of the project; rather they’re known to be working on a covers album of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” I wouldn’t put Flaming Side of the Moon past them, though, considering they’re working on a COVERS ALBUM OF SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND.

UPDATE: it’s real!
