More than twenty-five years after the band’s heyday, Guns N’ Roses remains iconic and occupies a comfortable space in the back of many people’s minds. The nostalgia still rides high for the group that captured the zeitgeist of hair-metal excellence.
Axl Rose still tours with a new lineup, but many fans recognize that the new band doesn’t come close to the old one. Back in the day, Axl wasn’t hauling in orchestras, endlessly layering production, and taking decades to make a new album. Without Slash and Duff McKagan, the new Guns n’ Roses doesn’t hold a candle to the original five.
Slash is currently in Sweden to promote a Marshal London phone and hang with Graveyard. He spoke with Aftonbladet TV, and the reporter mumbled, “I’ve heard that you’ve made friends with Axl Rose again.” Slash famously left the band in 1996 after a turbulent relationship with Axl, who appears to enjoy a turbulent relationship with many people. Slash took the question surprisingly well. In fact, his answer revealed significant progress between the two frenemies:
“It was probably way overdue, you know. But it’s … you know, it’s very cool at this point. You know, let some of that, sort of, negative … dispel some of that negative stuff that was going on for so long.”
When asked about a possible reunion, Slash hesitated to dole out much more:
“Oh, I couldn’t answer that one, though…”
It’s been a few months since Slash delivered a “never say never” message when confronted with the same question. Even though Slash says he and Axl reconciled, he can’t be jumping at the idea of working alongside him again. Slash once revealed that he handled Axl with “kid gloves” since the very early days (when Axl jumped from a moving vehicle during a tantrum). Axl was also chronically late for everything (sometimes to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). After the overblown Chinese Democracy, a reunion could be just as messy.
Still, the old Guns n’ Roses always did messy well.
