About a week ago, I received a DM on Twitter from none other Josh Tillman, better known as Father John Misty. He wanted to know if I had time to record a podcast. I said I did. An hour later, I called him, and we talked for around 80 minutes about … everything.
This was not the first time Tillman reached out to me — he also messaged me after last month’s episode on his latest album, Pure Comedy, with Pitchfork’s Jillian Mapes. (Read my review of the album here.) It was a good talk — my immediate impression was that Tillman was quite smart, very funny, more than a little crazy, and a born conversationalist. After that call, I asked Tillman if he would appear on the podcast. He said “yes,” and because he’s a man of his word, he took some time out of his busy schedule to reach out for an impromptu conversation.
We cover a lot of ground in this pod: We talk about the scuttled Pure Comedy musical; the controversial “Total Entertainment Forever” video; his next record, which he says is already written; the video-game habits of his former band, Fleet Foxes; and (of course) the madness of mass media. Basically, whatever happened to be on Tillman’s mind during that hour and a half was covered.
