Marilyn Manson is not having a bad week, press wise. First, we talked up some of his more motley roles he has done in the acting world, and now we get news he invented grunge music. Okay, well that’s a bit of a stretch. What he actually said to Noisey when talking about his music and the state of music overall when he entered it was:

I hated rock n’ roll when I started. It was on the cusp of grunge and a lot of bands that I used to call “commonist rock” because everyone wanted to be like the common man with the flannel shirts and Pearl Jam and their fight against Ticketmaster and all this horse sh*t. Nirvana was different. That was one of the bands I covered first as a journalist and I’m just going to go ahead and say I coined the term “grunge” in a review of Bleach. You’re welcome.

So Marilyn Manson didn’t say he invented grunge music as a genre in so much as he says he was the one who first bestowed such a fitting title upon it. While one cannot confirm or deny that this is true, it would seem if that were in print, someone would be able to find a copy of it somewhere and confirm or deny this. Did Marilyn Manson use the term ‘grunge’ first in his alleged review of ‘Bleach?’

Uproxxers, go do your thing. If anyone can find this review (or confirm it’s lack of existence), it’s you!
