Reba McEntire covered Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” for Neil Patrick Harris’ variety show Best Time Ever in one of the strangest pieces of television we’ve seen in a while. In the bit, Neil Patrick Harris leads a hammy, musical theater run-through of a bar fight while Reba, who couldn’t even be bothered to get on board with the conceit and don a costume (Ryan Adams, she ain’t), sings a cover of Swift’s mega-hit.
The bit reads as a little insane, even among the throw-everything-at-the-wall atmosphere of Best Time Ever. The whole thing reeks a bit of “Dear God, pay attention to us.” But people are writing about it, so it must be a good move on NBC’s part. And it got Reba to sing on national television, and anything that does that will always come out as a net positive.
For more Swift coverage, check out the amount of money she reportedly makes in a day. Wash that down with the news that “Blank Space” is one of the most viewed videos in history. And follow that up with her our takeaways from her recent, in-depth GQ profile (she freaks out about Justin Timberlake, just like an average Joe).
