The National’s New Album Is Going To Be Weird, If This Teaser Is Any Indication

This video teasing The National’s long-awaited Trouble Will Find Me follow-up sure makes it seem like Matt Berninger and Co. are about to get real weird.

Being spooky and mysterious is kind of what teaser videos do, so take this with a grain of salt. But the clip shared by the band features music that sounds more like the rise of Skynet soundtracked by Radiohead than the musings of a sentient bottle of wine. And the clip is no less creepy, with a news crawl that says “Sleep Well Beast” and “the system only dreams in total darkness.” Check it out up top.

Maybe this is what happens when you spend years popping out strange covers, working closely with a cartoon series and spawning side projects. They debuted a new song live that gives some indication of what to expect. “Turtleneck” features those odd static-y noises, but also has Berninger at his barking best. Give that a listen below.

While there’s no indication of what the new National project will be or when its coming out, we’ve reached the teaser video stage. So, we should probably expect to know a little more in the coming weeks, even if its just a studio version of “Turtleneck.”
