Yesterday, former NBA player and really fading star Dennis Rodman told a reporter for Sky News that he wasn’t going to North Korea this week so he could talk about human rights or basic diplomacy, as he was instead on his way there with 11 former NBA players to play an exhibition game for Kim Jong-Un’s birthday. Eventually, after the media pressed him enough, Rodman said that he would possibly talk to the man he loves about some of that stuff, but not before he also compared America’s crowded prison system to a country led by a man who allegedly had his own uncle eaten alive by 120 dogs.
This morning, a very-tired-looking Rodman spoke with New Day’s Chris Cuomo on CNN about this trip that he referred to as “a great idea for the world,” and when the host pushed the issue of American businessman Kenneth Bae’s imprisonment in North Korea, Rodman finally snapped and fired back in defense of his BFF, Kim Jong-Un, and basically declared Bae guilty.
“Are you going to take an opportunity, if you get it, to speak up for the family of Kenneth Bae and say, Let us know why this man is being held?’ If you can help them, will you take the opportunity?” Cuomo asked.
“The one thing about politics, Kenneth Bae did one thing. If you understand — if you understand what Kenneth Bae did,” Rodman said with a pause, then added “Do you understand what he did? In this country?”
“What did he do?” Cuomo said. “You tell me.”
“You tell me,” Rodman shouted. “You tell me. Why is he held captive?”
“They haven’t released any charges,” Cuomo said. “They haven’t released any reason.”
“I would love to speak on this,” Rodman said, again waving Smith off.
And, boy howdy, Rodman went ahead and… didn’t speak on it at all.
Instead, the Worm absolutely snapped while explaining the sacrifices that the 10 former players who joined him were making on this trip, and he screamed, “I don’t give a f*ck, a rat’s ass what you think!” before Smith tried to calm him down to no avail.
Basically, this interview went down like an awesome wrestling promo, except it’s not scripted so it’s kind of sad. Like, Rodman really seems to think that his buddy Kim Jong-Un is misunderstood, even though everyone else refuses to hang out with them because they know he’s a total dick, so he’s becoming exhausted trying to defend him. And even the guys that they paid to hang out with them are like, “Dude, we didn’t sign up for this,” and now it’s only a matter of time before Gil Hodges is chained up in a North Korean meth lab for the rest of his life.
