Some Folks Chased A Wheel Of Cheese Down A Hill Again

Times are changing, man. Sometimes I don’t even recognize the world around me from the one of my youth. Then I see things like the Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling Race — an annual event that’s been held since the 15th century where swarms of people fall down while descending a hill at high speed  — and I am reassured that some things stay the same.

Of course, these people weren’t just falling down a hill and looking silly. They were falling down a hill and looking silly chasing after cheese, and if your response to that is “yeah, that makes sense,” then you are like me. The cheese in use, since you asked, is the traditional Double Gloucester (pronounced GLOSS-ter), and it weighs nine pounds. It’s a hard cheese, which means that we just gave you a Hard Cheese Fact.

Unfortunately, no Americans did their patriotic duty to steal and improve on something the British do by winning the race like Kenny Rackers, American Hero in 2013. All local boys took the crown this year. Like every running of the race since 2010, it was unofficial, since the practice was officially canceled due to safety concerns (and here’s the obligatory hot take about it if that’s what you’re into).
