Things Got Scary At A High School Football Game When Gunshots Were Heard Near The Field

There was a really scary moment at Friday night’s football game between Sumner and Vashon high schools in St. Louis. According to witnesses at the game, gunshots sounded from right nearby Sumner’s stadium. The gunshots were so close to the stadium that people in attendance could smell gunpowder.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports everything stopped so that those in attendance could duck and cover themselves. Once the incident was cleared up, members of both teams met with the officials and decided to continue the game.

Vashon football player Levi Stockard said hearing gunshots on field was scary, but he also said, “You’re almost immune.”

Gateway’s Fabian Harris said of the gunshots: “It’s really a shame because it’s not a testament to this league or this area at all.”

A lot of credit goes to the police officers in the area. According to the aunt of one of the players in the game, the officers were like “Johnny on the spot,” while the Post-Dispatch reports that the authorities “circled the area shortly after the gunshots.” It is believed that the shots weren’t directed towards anyone at the game, and the police later stated that there was a man in his 20s found nearby with a gunshot wound behind his ear. It is unknown if he was injured in this shooting or if he was shot in an unrelated event.
