The Embarrassing Moment When A Hockey Goalie Scores On His Own Net

For our regular check-in on the flubs and foibles of hockey, we now take you all the way to Poland, wherein goalie David Zabolotny had a little trouble clearing his lines. And when we say “a little trouble,” we of course mean he did an unconscionably stupid thing and put the puck in his own damn net.

The fun thing about hockey is that when you put your athletes on ice, it puts many of their screw-ups in gracefully slow motion. Plenty of time for an elongated “Noooooooooo” from JKH fans as Zabolotny slowly turns and fires the puck in the exact wrong space. Plenty of time, even, to speculate about whether he did it on purpose. How else to explain a screwup this egregious? He wasn’t exactly blindfolded.

You know what would have solved Zabolotny’s problem? If there had been a second goalie to prevent even the shots that the first goalie puts on net. What’s that? You say someone’s already tried that and it’s against the rules? Sorry David, looks like you’re on your own.
