The First Actor Cast In Joss Whedon’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Spinoff Is A Familiar Face

By 10.14.12

As the old adage goes, it’s not a Joss Whedon project until he brutally kills someone you love. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Serenity, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog — Whedon murdered fan favorites in all of them. He did the same thing in The Avengers, with Agent Phil Coulson. (I’m not including a SPOILER ALERT because, c’mon, it’s the third highest grossing movie of all-time. SPOILER: the boat sinks in Titanic.) Occasionally, though, he’ll resurrect, say, a certain blonde slayer, and it sounds like he’ll be doing the same for ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D.

Avengers alum Clark Gregg will reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson in the network’s adaptation of the Marvel comic series, Marvel announced Saturday at New York Comic-Con.

Gregg, who previously co-starred on The New Adventures of Old Christine, played the character — a member of the elite task force — in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and voiced the role in Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man.

So, how’s Coulson going to die this time? My money’s on something ironic, like someone cutting his ears into little pieces with his earpiece, and then blowing his brains out. OK, maybe it’s not so much ironic as unnecessarily cruel, LIKE WHAT YOU DID WITH OUR EMOTIONS AT THE END OF SERENITY, JOSS.
