The 10 Best GIFs From Last Night’s NBC Comedies

Where Community struggled, Parks and Recreation excelled, with a pitch perfect version of “5,000 Candles.” Also, a wedding that brought out the emotions. Then 1600 Penn happened.

  • Community: Yeah, something’s not right with Community. It’s just so…cold. It was never the fuzziest of shows, but the past three episodes have been so off-puttingly Abed-like in their sentimentality that, with the exception of Britta, I’m having a hard time caring about the characters, and even her relationship with Troy went from 0-to-married off-screen that it’s tough to gauge what the hell’s going on there. The actors are still doing top-notch work, but holy crap, what was Annie’s plot? Alison Brie did everything she could with the unremarkable material — and there were some decent moments, like when she attempted to throw the contents of the empty glasses into Jeff’s face — but Annie’s somehow reverted back to her season one self, albeit more desperate and sad. She’s Trudy, basically. There was a lot wrong with “Conventions of Space and Time,” from its Big Bang Theory-like treatment of women at a convention to Tricia Helfer’s wasted guest star role to the overuse of Inspector Spacetime, and there’s a lot wrong with Community, too. But hey, at least we saw Joel McHale and Gillian Jacobs shirtless!
  • Parks and Recreation: Yup, perfect. Not afraid to admit I cried, multiple times. Ron’s speech, the city hall wedding, Leslie’s dress, the flashbacks, Chris’s gift for Ben, the acoustic performance of “5,000 Candles,” they all got to me, and it’s amazing how far and how meant-to-be the Knope/Wyatt match-up has become, after a bit of a forced start. “Leslie and Ben” would have made for a perfect series finale, as was intended, though “Correspondents’ Lunch” was excellent, too, largely because Perd Hapley made an appearance. Also, there was a killer KKK joke. I love you, Parks and Rec, and I like you.
  • 1600 Penn: HAHAHAHAHA, is not something anyone’s ever said during 1600 Penn.

Right this way, folks, to the best Britta and Ron Swanson have to offer.
