’12 Monkeys’ Is The First TV Show With The Ability To Change Your Living Room’s Lighting Scheme

Advanced technology has been steadily invading our homes, helping to automate everything from refrigerators to coffee machines, to just about anything that is powered by electricity. Now, the lighting system in your living room will experience a Skynet-like takeover with the entire first season of SyFy‘s 12 Monkeys. If you have at least $200, 12 Monkeys will send cues to your lighting scheme, and it will change hues according to the action occurring on your TV screen (that rhymed a lot more than I intended).

First, you have to purchase the Philips Hue lighting system, which starts around the $200 range. The lights connect to your modem, and can be controlled by a wireless device like your smartphone or tablet. But, when 12 Monkeys kicks off on January 16th, SyFy’s Sync app will allow the show’s audio to control the color of the lights, giving you a more immersive experience. The network previously enabled this gimmick with Sharknado 2, but chances are you didn’t run to get yourself a Hue system to engage yourself in the water-winds of an aerial shark attack.

12 Monkeys is the first televised series that will use this technology regularly, so it’s probably only a matter of time before Hannibal begins sending rotting meat vapors through your air ducts, or House of Cards emails you naked pictures of yourself in order to make Frank Underwood’s intimidation more palpable.
