The Callback That Explains Why Rick Was So Quick To Slug Aaron On ‘The Walking Dead’

Because of the novelty and irony of it, and because of the RIDICULOUS outrage that it inspired on social media, much of the focus on Sunday night’s episode of The Walking Dead surrounded that awesome gay kiss.

One of the other talking points surrounding the episode, however, was how quick Rick was to lose his cool and punch out Aaron. Distrust might have been understandable, but some argued that Rick’s actions were over-the-top.

I get that, and that was my first thought, as well. I was like, “Simmer down, Rick. Listen to what Aaron has to say, and take it with a grain of salt, but you don’t have to punch the guy.”

But I now understand why Rick was so quick to lay out Aaron, thanks to a callback first spotted over on Reddit. You remember Alex? He only survived one episode, the fourth season finale. He was a member of Terminus, who showed them around the place. When asked by Michonne why Terminus existed, here was Alex’s response:

Now, here’s what Aaron said to Rick right before he hauled off and punched him.

There’s undoubtedly an echo of Alex’s statement in Aaron’s reasoning. Hopefully, the strength that Alexandria gains from people does not derive from the same strength that the people of Terminus gained from (eating) people.

Of course, Rick’s skepticism may still be appropriate. A couple of weeks ago, Andrew Lincoln had this to say about his character this season: “This is the first season that I’ve been making the right decisions. But then, no one f*cking listens to me! It’s bullsh*t! And I keep saying it.”

Seems like Lincoln is suggesting that his character’s skepticism will be well-founded in Alexandria, too, and that others (like Michonne) are wrong not to listen to him this season.

We will certainly see as things play out in Alexandria the rest of this season.
