The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Showrunners Confirm The Series Is ‘Approaching The Finish Line’

If HBO had its way, Game of Thrones would never end. The “tits and dragon” fantasy-drama would be their Doctor Who, with a new actress replacing Sansa Stark every couple of years. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have other plans, though. They’re are all about integrity and quality and blah blah blah. The showrunners recently told Entertainment Weekly that they’ve “known for several years now how many hours roughly we want it to go.” That would be 73 hours, which means after this 10-episode season, there would be 13 episodes to go, likely spread out over two abbreviated seasons.

Benioff and Weiss doubled down on the “Thrones won’t be on forever” talk to the Hollywood Reporter, confirming that “we’re approaching the finish line.”

We’re not walking away. We’re approaching the finish line. From the outset, our hope was to tell a complete story — beginning, middle, and end. We are writing the final act now, and the last thing we want to do is stay on stage after the play is over. (Via)

HBO has already sent dump trucks full of money to Benioff and Weiss’ homes, hoping to convince them to stay with Game of Thrones for, oh, another 47 years. They also mailed a really nice card with an iTunes gift certificate.

You’d have to have a stone heart to say no to that.
