The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Weekend IMAX Limited Run Earned Some Really Big Numbers

IMAX’s decision to bring Game of Thrones to the big screen has paid off. The final two episodes of the HBO juggernaut’s fourth season opened on 205 IMAX screens and earned $686,000 on Friday. According to Variety, the series hopes to earn roughly $2 million for the weekend, giving it a per-screen average of $9,800:

“The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format,” Pamela Levine, chief marketing officer at HBO, said in early January. “We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.”

To put this into perspective, American Sniper‘s per-screen average this weekend will be $7,695. Plus, this Game of Thrones theatrical release could possibly bring in even more money if shown on a different weekend — theater attendance is generally lower on Super Bowl weekend.
