With cable networks and online platforms such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon putting out cutting-edge programming, it seems like these days the major networks are willing to take greater risks than in the past. At least, that’s the only way I can wrap my head around this new series — not that that’s a bad thing. Fox has just ordered a half-hour single-camera sitcom called Chad: An American Boy, written by, produced, and — yes — starring Nasim Pedrad.

Pedrad will be playing the titular “Chad,” a 14-year-old Middle Eastern boy described as being “in the throes of adolescence,” who finds himself having to act as man of the house. Last year, it was announced that Pedrad had signed a deal with Fox to develop, write, and star in a sitcom, but at the time, details were thin. Pedrad says of the role:

“I’m thrilled to be able to portray a Middle Eastern family not working for or against Jack Bauer on network TV… Also, a big thank you to FOX for understanding that my true essence is that of an awkward and misguided 14-year-old boy.”

Bizarre? Sure. But given the taste we saw of Pedrad spoofing Aziz Ansari in character as Tom Haverford in that deleted SNL sketch, it definitely has potential. I’m definitely looking forward to finding out, that’s for damn sure.
