Obama Comes Out In Support Of Gay Marriage, The Internet Rejoices

If there was one issue the internet has had with President Obama, it’s been his stubborn refusal to speak out in favor of gay marriage. Well today it finally happened  in an interview with ABC.

“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told ABC’s Robin Roberts in an interview set to air on Good Morning America Thursday.

The internet has already reacted with celebratory Tumblrs (the glorious GIF at top made my day) though some not typically critical of Obama are calling bullsh*t. Mitt Romney, meanwhile, remains in favor of “traditional marriage,” meaning that this fall we’ll for the first time in American history have a presidential election in which the two major candidates aren’t united in opposition to gay marriage. Fox News is already terming it a “War on Marriage,” naturally. Should make for an interesting and long overdue national debate.

Also, Joe Biden will be on Jeopardy tonight, so set your DVRs.
