Good news for anyone who’s been anxiously awaiting the next bullet point in Donald Trump’s plan to make “America Great Again.” Now that he’s alienated Muslims, immigrants, and women, Trump’s taking on gay rights, pointing out that, actually, he’s not so opposed to making sure that people who’ve fought so hard for the ability to be legally married have that right stripped from them because it’s a states’ rights issue. Despite the fact that one of the main things the Supreme Court is supposed to do is make sure that minority groups are protected. But then, The Donald’s never been a scholar of history.

According to New York Magazine, Trump’s decision to come out swinging against the LGBT population–will Kim Davis be on stage crying and supporting him soon?–may be a last-ditch effort to gather the conservative vote in Iowa. At this point, then, it’s possible that Trump will say anything to get Christians to vote for him. Here’s what Trump said to Chris Matthews yesterday:

I wish that it was done by the state. I don’t like the way they ruled. I disagree with the Supreme Court from the standpoint they should have given the state — it should be a states’ rights issue. … This is a very surprising ruling. And I — I can see changes coming down the line, frankly. But I would have much preferred that they ruled at a state level and allowed the states to make those rulings themselves. … If I’m elected, I would be very strong in putting certain judges on the bench that maybe could change things, but they have a long way to go.

That’s not a particularly articulate statement, but NY Mag reports that Trump’s position may not actually be as set in stone as he’d like the conservatives to believe. Not only has he chastised Kim Davis for not doing her job, but he’s also pointed out that anyone fighting against marriage equality at this point is just doing it for “political gain.” And that was back in August! Who’s in charge of Trump’s internal consistency? He’s debating himself again.
