In the wake of the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, and the subsequent violence in Dallas that claimed the lives five police officers, much of the country is feeling pretty bleak. No one is immune to it.
Even Kim Kardashian, who isn’t typically known for intelligent or deep reflection, took to her website Friday to mourn the victims of police brutality. One can imagine how deeply the Black Lives Matter movement affects Kardashian and her immediate family, as she has to raise her two mixed race children with Kanye West in this world.
Despite the fact that her children will be raised in the spotlight, Kardashian writes that she doesn’t ever want to have to tell her son to be scared of the police, the very people who are sworn to protect him, due to the color of his skin. She goes on:
The last thing we need is to fuel anger with more hate or violence, especially toward the many incredible police officers who risk their lives every single day to protect our families and communities. We must peacefully use the power of our voices and the strength of our numbers to demand changes in the judicial system so that brutality doesn’t ever go unpunished.
It is our responsibility as Americans and as parents to create a safe future for our children. We must do something NOW. We must speak up until we are heard and real, effective changes are made.
Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, Sean Bell … and unfortunately so many more.
Hashtags are not enough. This must end now.
When Kim Kardashian of all people sounds like a voice of reason, it’s clear that we need to make a serious effort to fix what’s wrong in our society.
But of course, because it’s Kim Kardashian, her eloquent message of unity came just on the heels of a selfie promoting a product for Amazon Prime’s Deal of the Day. But we’ll make fun of her another time.
