Hip Hop Hooray! The New ‘ToeJam & Earl’ Game Has A Trailer And Rough Release Date

Oh, ToeJam & Earl — the game every Sega Genesis-owning kid was baffled by, yet couldn’t stop playing. Back then, most of us had no idea ToeJam & Earl was actually a pretty sophisticated Roguelike RPG with a tubular ’90s coat of paint, and way ahead of its time. Today randomly-generated levels and obtuse, challenging dungeon-hack RPGs are all the rage! And of course, hip hop aliens are always in style.

In other words, conditions are ripe for ToeJam & Earl to get funky again. So back in 2015 series co-creator Greg Johnson launched a Kickstarter campaign for ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, a new game that would follow in the style of the Genesis original. The Kickstarter was a success, but we haven’t heard much from Planet Funkotron since.

Well, we finally have a big update! ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove is coming to “PC and Console” (which consoles aren’t specified, but you can assume Xbox One and PS4) in early 2017 courtesy of Adult Swim Games. We also have our first Back in the Groove gameplay trailer and, well, the game is looking exactly how you’d expect/want it to look. Floating islands, hula girls, a few new humans like Segway guy, and lots of neon.

Here’s the full version of the new ToeJam & Earl theme song again for your old-school enjoyment…
