There’s a new Skywalker in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

It seems fairly obvious, but Lucasfilm”s Kathleen Kennedy has been talking about the bridge that connects all of the “Star Wars” saga films, and it has some interesting implications for director J.J. Abrams” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

“The saga films focus on the Skywalker family,” Kennedy said on Costo Connection (via Coming Soon). “The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. ‘The Force Awakens” follows ‘Return of the Jedi” and continues that generational story. The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe.”

The Lucasfilm plan is to release a “Star Wars” saga film every two years with a “Star Wars” story (formerly anthology) film between saga entries.

Now, again, it seems self-evident to say that it is the Skywalker family that is at the center of the saga films, but this also pretty much confirms that a new Skywalker will be introduced in “The Force Awakens.” It”s hard to imagine that Lucasfilm is banking on Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill to carry their franchise forward, which isn”t to say that they don”t have a crucial role to play. It”s simply to say that at some point, a passing of the mantle will happen. Fans have been speculating about the true identity of Daisy Ridley”s Rey, John Boyega”s Finn, and Adam Driver”s Kylo Ren for months.

J.J. Abrams has said that he”s intentionally holding back Finn and Rey”s last names, and that Kylo Ren isn”t Driver”s character”s real name. Recent speculation points to Ridley as the Skywalker, but even if that is true, there may be more than one. There may be another.
