HBO NOW Highlights For July (Including The Premiere Of ‘Vice Principals’)

Summer is officially upon us, which means you’ll have to slather yourself in sunscreen just to go outside to get your mail. Don’t do that. You’ll need much less UV protection if you relax and watch HBO NOW in the comfort of your own home. Particularly, you should be watching Vice Principalsbut you should also enjoy the series premiere of The Night Of, and the Season Two premiere of Ballers, too

Other than that, make sure you catch the premiere of Straight Outta Compton, one of the best films of 2015. Also, with the recent news about Stargate, maybe you can catch up with a trio of Stargate films to bolster your inner narrative of being a universe explorer.

Here’s what you should be watching this July on HBO NOW.

Vice Principals, Series Premiere (7/17)

The last time Jody Hill and Danny McBride got together for an HBO series, they came up with the endlessly entertaining Eastbound & Down. That previous marriage resulted in some gut-busting scenes, including this one. For their second series, Hill and McBride have recruited Walton Goggins (Justified, The Shield) — he and McBride play two vice principals whose particular brand of educational leadership will be sure to provide the funny.

Black Mass2015 (7/9)

Black Mass is one of those films that will be watched decades from now by film scholars who’ll study Johnny Depp’s performance. It’s a damn fine transformation for Depp, who succumbs to his inner darkness to give his characterization of Whitey Bulger creepy, demonic energy. Bulger is a real bad guy, and Depp gives one of his best career performances in bringing his inflections to life. The film itself sadly doesn’t hold together under the weight of Depp’s gravitas, but it’s a worthy investment for that alone.

Jackie Brown1997

Jackie Brown is a terrific film, with a noir-ish plot and colorful characters. It may not be  Tarantino’s most popular film, but it’s got buckets of swagger and it’s arguably the chilliest blast of coolness amongst his works.

Here’s the list of titles coming this July.
