Whenever someone covers a popular song it’s usually never as good as the original. Some are good though, like Justin Bieber’s take on the track, but some are absolute garbage. In this case, Sufjan Stevens nailed his cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” by adding some very Sufjan-esque falsetto vocals into the mix.
On Saturday night Stevens performed in Jersey City at Landmark Lowe’s Jersey Theatre, and to top off the special Halloween show, the folk singer brought out R&B singer Gallant to assist on Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” Gallant took on the main vocal parts while Sufjan sang background vocals and harmonies on the choruses. The pair of singers somehow made the laid-back R&B track even more laid back than the original.
Now that we have the best cover of one of the best songs from 2015, we don’t need anyone else covering it. The quota for “Hotline Bling” covers has been met and Sufjan Stevens has taken home the gold in the Drake covers category.
