You may have already heard that Lifetime, the TV channel that used to show Supermarket Sweep but now is mostly known for its campy movies, is planning a biopic about the life story of pop icon Britney Spears. Simply titled Britney, the film will star Natasha Bassett, who was previously in the Coen Brothers movie Hail, Caesar! and is now an example of how weird a career in showbiz can be. Previous “behind-the-scenes” Lifetime movies, such as the ones about Full House and Saved by the Bell, have been promoted as being “unauthorized” takes on the stories involved, presumably to prove that they are going to get real. Well, this Britney Spears movie is decidedly unauthorized.
A Spears representative told Entertainment Weekly that Spears is not involved in this project “in any way, shape or form… nor does it have her blessing.” This is not surprising, but Spears probably wanted to make sure that people realized there was no connection between her and this likely slapped together film designed to bilk people interested in the juicy, sordid secrets of Spears’ life. You know, even though Spears grew up perpetually in the public eye and has had essentially every detail of her life pored over repeatedly in the past decade or so.
This is a big year for Spears. She has a new album, Glory, coming out. She will be performing at the 2016 MTV VMAs. Now she has a cheesy Lifetime movie being made about her life. Not even Madonna can say that. Dustin Diamond, on the other hand…
