After DNCE accepted the award for Best New Artist, The Chainsmokers and Halsey took the stage to perform their new hit song, “Closer,” against a snowy backdrop. The catchy, nostalgic breakup anthem highlighted the mundane but unique memories of a relationship — like driving around listening to the same song on repeat and exposing each other’s quirks.
The lyrics explore a former couple’s reunion at a hotel bar where they are now older, wiser and wistful as they recall their once-everlasting love for each other. The Chainsmokers’ Andrew Taggart stepped out of his usual production role to explore vocals, and his performance was sincere and sweet if not a little shy.
Their collaboration has been a winning effort. “Closer” just reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart shortly after its debut earlier this month. With it, the artists hit historic milestones in their respective careers as the song reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts earlier this month.
The Chainsmokers, who have helped enhance the collective soundtrack for the digital generation since 2014, with their catchy, playful dance hit, “Selfie” are also nominated for “Best Electronic Video” for their track “Don’t Let Me Down.”
