If I have but one hope for us as a country, it’s that at some point in the near future we learn that the Internet is not to be trusted. Yes, the Internet is entertaining, thought-provoking, generally upsetting and/or generally something that makes life relatively easier. However, trustworthy it is not. If we actually need further proof of this, we only need to turn to the show Catfish. The MTV show is focused solely on shattering the false realities held up by poor saps who have been tricked into believing they’re dating someone they’re not, because the person on the other end of the computer screen is pulling a fast one. I’m serious, the Internet is lying to you.*
* although not right now. I promise.
Spencer is a dude from Tennessee who had been in a relationship for six years and was in love. He was, in fact, so madly in love that he spent a quarter of his life savings, took an emerald stone that belonged to his grandmother and had a ring made for the love of his life. The kicker is, however, that Spencer was in love with Katy Perry. Katy Perry though, was very much not in love with Spencer. The international pop star, up until recently, did not even know Spencer from Tennessee existed because the “Katy Perry” he was talking to was actually a gal named Harriet, a Canadian woman living over in London.
Spencer got catfished big time.
Catfish brought this ugly scene to light in a recent episode and as you can imagine, it didn’t go well. It even took a few weeks for Spencer to accept that he had been dating Harriet, the Canadian living in London, and not Katy Perry, the voice of Smurfette.
Now Perry is weighing on this sorry state of heartbreak, as she was asked about it during an interview with The Morning Mash Up Show on Sirius XM.
“Someone sent me a link and I didn’t actually read through it because I just think it’s really unfortunate and very sad. my heart goes out to him actually because anybody that’s been fooled like that — people have dreams and people live in different parts of the world where not everything is so accessible. We live on the coasts and we get stuff in a way that other people don’t get and I feel bad for him. So I didn’t really like to indulge in that because my heart would die.”
It is really unfortunate, Katy Perry. It really is.
Better luck next time, Spencer. Hopefully the next gal he dates is one out in the real world (again, not the MTV show.)
