Stunning news coming out of Sony today, L.A. Reid, the Chairman and CEO of Epic Records is no longer with the company. Billboard is reporting that the executive has severed ties with the label effective immediately. This new development comes just weeks after Rob Stringer took over as the new CEO of Sony Music Entertainment in April.
What makes this particular turnover in personnel so stunning is the degree of success that Reid has enjoyed over the past year alone. He oversaw the rollout of both of Atlanta trap star Future’s albums and helped push them to No. 1. He brought along the reunion of the acclaimed and adored rap outfit A Tribe Called Quest and ushered in their new album We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. He also helped promote and push No. 1 albums by DJ Khaled, Major Key, as well as G.O.O.D. Music star and Kanye-protege Travis Scott, Birds In The Trap Sign McKnight.
At this time it remains unclear what the way forward is for Epic Records and who will take over the label in Reid’s stead. It’s also murky as to where Reid himself might end up.
We’ll update this story as it develops.
