Laverne Cox took a break from being Beyonce for a second to embody the fierceness and slayage of NIcki Minaj on this week’s episode of Lip Sync Battle. While Orange Is The New Black co-star Samira Wiley walked away the winner of Wednesday’s show, Cox still recieved the support of Nicki Minaj for her kicking (literally) performance of “Roman’s Revenge.”
“Shante, you stay!!!,” Nicki wrote on Instagram, referencing RuPaul’s iconic words from RuPaul’s Drag Race where drag queens lip sync for…their…LIFE, or get cut from the show. Despite Cox’s lost, Nicki still thought the Rocky Horror Show actress killed it, adding, “Cuz huntayyy u SLAY! [lots of positive emojis] #LaverneCox #YesMaam [heart emoji]”
Cox’s Nicki Minaj impression was very entertaining, but pretty predictable. She matched the rap diva’s intensity and gave us flashes of Beyonce by rolling around on the floor before ending her energetic performance. The actress also channeled her inner Big Freedia, taunting Samira WIley with, “I did not come to play with you, hoe! I came to slay, bitch! I like cornbreads and collard greens, bitch! You besta believe it!”
Unfortunately for Cox, the Nicki Minaj impression, along with her performance of Destiny’s Child’s “Lose My Breath,” were no match for Wiley’s Naughty By Nature-featuring rendition of “O.P.P” and Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart.”
