Phantogram’s newest single “Cruel World” is from their upcoming album Three. Sarah Barthel and the minimalist piano play tag team about the unforgiving world we all inhabit. One of the best parts of the track is the sparse coldness of the verses and subject matter juxtaposed with the warm and colorful beat change for the song’s chorus.
“I used to see beauty in people
But now I see muscle and bones
I never wanted to hurt you
But I’m sorry my friend this is the end,
So I’m saying my goodbyes…”
Barthel spoke to the song’s meaning with Complex. “Cruel World was one of the first songs we wrote for Three,” she said. “It set the tone for the album in a huge way for us. The overall message is about how tragic life can be at times – how the world can bring you down… But you have to try to find the beauty in it sometimes.”
Three will be released on October 7th on Republic Records. The album is available for pre-order on iTunes and Google Music, with physical copies also available upon release.
