There’s been a lot of talk lately about artists taking innovative approaches to releasing new music, but Tame Impala has truly done something new. In anticipation of the band’s forthcoming album Currents, vocalist and guitarist Kevin Parker conducted a Reddit AMA this week. So many great questions were asked about the band’s approach to songwriting, Kevin’s favorite album (a tie between Air’s Talkie Walkie, Supertramp’s Breakfast in America, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and Queens of the Stone Age’s Rated R), and what music Kevin likes to get busy to (Frank Ocean, for those who were wondering, which is not a bad choice).
Surprisingly enough, no one asked him for a new song. It took the frontman himself to goat someone into asking him, and that’s why we have the new track “Disciples” today.
In addition to the free song, when asked about streaming and illegal downloads, Kevin said he thinks that all music will be free eventually.
“I feel like music will be free sooner or later, and i think I’m all for it. There’s all this talk of music needing a monetary value, this ownership of music, even that it needs a physical form. But intrinsically… it’s MUSIC, it should be better than that. Some of my most important musical experiences were from a burnt CD with songs my friend downloaded for me at a terrible digital quality… I didn’t care… it changed my life all the same. For me the value of music is the value you extract from it.”
No one knows whether or not Currents will be free, but judging by what we’ve heard so far like “Cause I’m A Man” and “Let It Happen,” it would definitely be worth spending a few bucks.
