As the internet makes the world smaller, more and more artists have begun crossing cultural boundaries to create new styles from pieces of the old. Electronic producer Diplo took this concept a step further with his Major Lazer project, creating a dancehall-trap fusion that’s brought island flavor to the EDM/pop scenes in a whole new way. That’s why Tory Lanez, noted fan of the genre (the second single from his major label debut album, I Told You, sampled the dancehall classic “Everyone Falls in Love” by Tanto Metro and Devonte), tapped Major Lazer for his and Cashmere Cat’s latest foray into the tropical sound, “Miss You.”
Like the aforementioned “Luv,” “Miss You” was produced by Cashmere Cat and Benny Blanco, but as Diplo told Zane Lowe on a recent Beats 1 Radio appearance to promote the track as World Record, “it kind of fit the Major Lazer mold a little bit, so [he] just helped [Cashmere Cat] steer it a little bit.” The single also features a co-writing credit from Ed Sheeran, whose “Shape Of You” similarly paid homage to tropical vibes that Tory and Cashmere aimed for on “Miss You.”
As far as where the track will land, Diplo admits that the trio made it for Tory’s next album, but jokes that since there are so many names on it, it belongs to Zane Lowe now. Check out the full interview below.
