Chris Christie Awkwardly Explains His Support For Donald Trump On Fallon

New Jersey governor and former presidential candidate Chris Christie stumped for Donald Trump on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and it was…awkward.

The interview starts off, of course, with Fallon bringing up Christie’s “hostage face” at Trump’s Super Tuesday victory speech. “Were you being held hostage at this time?” Fallon asks. Christie replies, “This is what you would like if you were standing behind Jay Leno when he was doing his monologue,” to audience “oohs.”

Christie then clarifies his comment by saying that his expression was actually his listening face. “But if I was standing behind Jay Leno, I would move to the right maybe 4 feet and just get out of the way and let Jay Leno talk.” Then he puts a cardboard cutout of Christie with his listening face behind the governor. “You don’t find that distracting?” Fallon asks.

After he then brings out his own cardboard cutout, Fallon asks Christie why he supported Trump over Kasich and Cruz. “Because I think he’s better than them,” Christie explains somewhat combatively. “It’s not really hard. That’s why you do it. It wasn’t like I drew it out of a hat or something, Jimmy. It was my judgment that I thought he was better than the other two.” Christie then jokes that the other reason he picked Trump was because Fallon didn’t run, to barely any laughter.

To end the interview, Fallon asks about whether Christie is angling for the vice presidential nomination, to which Christie replies that he wants to be the tambourinist in The Roots instead. No reaction from them; doesn’t seem like it’s gonna happen.

Christie also explained his M&M consumption habits again. He says that an arena, he buys the box of M&Ms, but then it opens up to a bag of M&Ms that’s very flimsy, and can spill the candy if he’s cheering during the game. So he pours them into the box. “I don’t want to lose an M&M. Not one,” Christie says, like the politician he is. So there you go. You can watch more M&M shenanigans below.
