There’s really only one good reason to go anywhere near Facebook Home, which we’ve already gotten into. Well, that lockscreen might be coming to iOS. Might.
At least, it will if Facebook has its way:
[Facebook] is speaking to Apple and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) about expanding to other platforms, Adam Mosseri, director of product at Menlo Park, California-based Facebook, said in an interview on Bloomberg West. The talks are ongoing and nothing has been finalized.
“We’ve shown them what we’ve built and we’re just in an ongoing conversation,” Mosseri said, referring to discussions with Apple and Microsoft.
Personally, we’re skeptical that Apple, a company infamous for its control freak nature, is going to say anything to Facebook other than “That’s cute, now go away while the adults talk.” Apple likes to have a complete and total death grip on its customer base and what they do, and Facebook likes a similar complete and total death grip, so the two coming to an accord seems a bit unlikely.
We also remain skeptical Home won’t work out to be a mess in the long run. As we’ve noted previously, Facebook is pretty cagey about what, if any, details Home might be collecting about you. And then there’s the question of just how enthusiastic anybody is for yet another version of Android.
Windows Phone 8, on the other hand, is likely a lock because, really, they could change it so it’d ship with Facebook Home, and who’d notice?
