Drones are only improving as time goes on and more people get into flying them everywhere, even when they really shouldn’t. And the flying little guys will only improve if Qualcomm has any say in it.
The above video shows off some advanced features the company claims its special drone-adapted version of its Snapdragon processor can bring to the party. Of course, you’ll need to strap it with at least four cameras to get all these features, including a stereo camera and a downward facing camera, but if you’re building a drone, you might as well go deluxe. And what we see of the processor at work is fairly impressive as it maps obstacles in real time and uses the stereo camera to gauge depth and avoid obstacles.
This is a preview of what Qualcomm says is in store for its larger presentation at CES. That will roll out next Tuesday, so we’ll likely see just what technology they have in store then, along with their plans for Snapdragon elsewhere in the stuff we use. Until then, let’s just hope the kid who strapped a flamethrower to his drone to roast a turkey doesn’t get access to these parts.
