The first time I heard Sadat X was on the original version of Biggie’s “Come On.” I was rummaging through one of my uncle’s cassette mixtapes and even through all its pop and hiss glory, I knew his voice was distinctive to stand out on any track. Of course he was already a pillar in Brand Nubian and went on to have a substantial career in this thing called Hip-Hop. Another signature player, J Rawls, remembered him well and together, they tell the tale of how their track “Face It” became to be.
For anyone finding themselves in rap debate surrounding ageism, do remember that Hip-Hop used to be bigger than just hearing the song and resuming your life the moment the record stopped. It was a way of life and for most well-versed disciples of the culture–young and old–it still is.
