Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, arguably one of the greatest big men in NBA history and the game’s all-time leading scorer underwent quadruple bypass surgery on April 16th, according to the UCLA Medical Center. Abdul-Jabbar was diagnosed with cardiovascular disease which ultimately led to the surgery.

At this time, Abdul-Jabbar would like to thank his surgical team and the medical staff at UCLA, his alma mater, for the excellent care he has received. He is looking forward to getting back to his normal activities soon.

He asks that you keep him in your thoughts and, most importantly, cherish and live each day to its fullest.

Doctors say he is expected to make a full recovery.

Abdul-Jabbar is one of the most decorated basketball players of all-time. At UCLA, he led the Bruins to three national championships from 1967-1969. In the NBA as a member of the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers, he won six titles in 20 years. For close to a decade he was the most dominant player in the game, winning 6 MVP awards from 1971-1980.

We often forget how good Jabbar really was. We often forget his place among the game’s elite.

That’s a shame. Get better Kareem.
