J.R. Smith Doled Out A Flagrant 1 Foul On Al Horford For No Discernible Reason

J.R. Smith has never been known for his decision making skills. So it wasn’t much of a surprise when he took a hard swing at Al Horford during the Cavs’ preseason matchup against the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday. On one hand, you might rightfully be thinking, why? It’s a meaningless preseason game. The primary goal of preseason action is to get your sea legs back without injuring yourself or someone else. Who cares if you give up an easy bucket in the lane? It’s not like it’s the playoffs.

But then again, it’s not like it’s the playoffs. We’re pretty sure everyone in a Cavs uniform would prefer Smith get it out of his system now rather than when the stakes are really high, like last spring when he sucker-punched Jae Crowder during their opening-round series against the Boston Celtics and earned a two-game suspension.

But still, to Smith and Trevor Booker and whoever else is trying to go HAM right now when there’s approximately three weeks remaining before the official start of the NBA season: settle down. It’s a long season. There’s plenty of time for all that later. We’re all anxious for the season to start. We get it. But let’s just take a deep breath and try to get through this with as little mayhem as possible.
