Paul Pierce Says ‘A Championship Is Coming, Baby’ While Wishing At A Buddhist Temple

The Los Angeles Clippers are in China for a pair of match-ups with the Charlotte Hornets as part of the league’s preseason Global Games program. Though Paul Pierce’s team lost the first leg of its two-game series against Charlotte earlier this week, that meaningless setback clearly didn’t weaken his optimism on Los Angeles’ prospects for this season.

At a Buddhist temple in Shanghai, the 37-year-old made a wish and forecasted a championship for the long-suffering Clippers.

The primary reason for Pierce choosing Los Angeles in free agency, of course, was its chance to win a title. And while he’s always been one of the most cocksure players in basketball, the future Hall of Famer’s obvious confidence in the Clippers’ championship hopes certainly aren’t unfounded. Doc Rivers finally fortified his bench this summer, and his team flashed elite form in the postseason last April when dispatching of the San Antonio Spurs.

By all objective accounts, 2015-16 represents Los Angeles’ best chance to make a deep playoff run since its recent renaissance. Not only have the Clippers never been more equipped to do so from a standpoint of overall talent, but Pierce and Rivers went overseas with the revamped Boston Celtics in fall 2007 before winning a championship the following June.

Might history repeat itself with a parade in downtown Los Angeles eight months from now? Only time will tell. It definitely won’t hurt the Clippers, though, that Pierce and company might have the gods on their side.
